BREATHING CHAPARRAL | JOURNAL

Inhaling steadily, exhaling gently into the fieriness of developing Manzanita skin and glistening like Mountain Mahogany.

Coming up this Saturday I'm excited to be part of an online conversation with two other artists that I am continuing to collaborate with, Roz Moreton and Siân Barlow. We will be joined by Joe Parker who will be hosting the conversation.

Roz, Siân and myself have been in conversation over recent years, meeting online to make drawings together - drawing together.

In this work we have been exploring our sense of belonging to the places where we live, through the work of close attention, noticing and relationship with the plants around us. We select the plants we draw - gathered from where we live. We also make our own drawing materials with plants from our gardens or responsibly gathered.

Our online conversation coincides with our participation in the Terrain Art Biennial 2025. You are most welcome to visit the exhibition and linger a while. It's at 1631 Fair Park Avenue, Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, California, up until November 15th.

Or, if it's difficult for you to get there, there's more information about our work together and images of some of our drawings on our website.

asking someone else to

pull your weeds

takes away the seeing of how shallow those roots are

temporary and unrestrained

taking up space

without asking

how can we do this together? no stopping

or pausing

for even the tiniest of moments

to listen slowly

firmly

willingly

they wrap their arms

around everyone else hoarding

soil water air

from those with deeper roots asking someone else to

pull your weeds

takes away your power to pause

for even the tiniest of moments

and discover

your home in all it’s glorious wildness acknowledging

accepting

not apologizing

for being on your knees

with fingers pulling

instead of pointing

Cross Section Reflection

creating color with celosia

realizing that in just a short lifetime

she grows layers of skin

with space in between

for thirsty pushing

of tentacles

searching for a common place

with space in between

in the hope

of finding a

gold nugget

in the beauty of brown
