BREATHING CHAPARRAL | JOURNAL

Inhaling steadily, exhaling gently into the fieriness of developing Manzanita skin and glistening like Mountain Mahogany.

Often in the process of working with plants to create color, there are surprises. And then. Sometimes, a happy accident occurs that seems like a little more. What this is and what it feels like is difficult to put into words, possibly surreal but not exactly. Maybe serendipity. There’s just something when it happens that creates a moment of extra pause. It’s a moment that goes straight to my heart. So, when there’s a conversation, early in the day about mapping hearts and one appears in the work hours later there is nothing else to do but pause, sigh, and smile.

smelling like dandelion

next to wet mint

and the heart

of artichoke

as we go

walking

listening

dreaming

off the trail into a field

where your soft leaves

sparkle in the light

and the bees often come

with curiosity

buzzing in our ear

as I stir

and you simmer
